The month of August is at an end and it’s the first day of September, wow. Life flies by, and so do the posts on blogs. The disadvantage of reading from a blog, unlike reading from a magazine, is that great information can be here and gone in a few days. I’m starting a ‘Monthly Round Up’ post which breaks down everything I covered in August.
Music Mondays featured Ra Ra Riot, Animal Collective, School of Seven Bells, and Blonde Redhead. As usual, most Music Mondays feature a free MP3 download.
Summer Style With Friends featured Jen Elias, Fashion Editor of SJ Helium, Flor De Maria, PR specialist and blogger at Flor De Maria Fashion and Payton McClure, Fashion Designer living in New York City.

More PROJECT greatness! I stumbled upon another great line based in LA, AS IS, a casual, soft knit, hippster attracted line. With the past season fashion trends bring influence from the EAST, I’m loving feathers, beads, and leather influence, especially when it’s on a modern cut T-Shirt or Harem pants. The line is pretty casaul, a bit edgy and a in a way, also sweet. Price points are reasonable from $40 -$80 average.
Their booth was really busy, great sign, and the girls who run their Sales and PR were styl’d to a T(see top). Another LA based line I never knew about. WE LOVE THAT!

I had heard of Falling Whistles, but never really knew what the company represented. I found them at PROJECT to find out and take a few pictures. They are, truly, a company I’ve grown to admire and support. Read on. Maybe not the most upbeat story, but the happy ending comes with what they are doing and what YOU can do. Buy yours today HERE!
A journal entry from the creator of Falling Whistles….
“Each had been abducted. Pluced from their homes, schools or farms. Each had been tied up and beaten. Each had been forced to kill…
…many of us have heard the stories of child-soldiers. Invisible Children and stories such as A Long Way Gone have granted us glimpses into their tortured lives.
I had heard. Known.cared. I had even reacted and raged. But when these boys told me of the whistle blowers, the horror grew feet and walked within me.
Captured by Nkunda’s rebel army, some boys not big enough to hold a gun were given merely a whistle and put on the front lines of battle.
THEIR SOLE DUTY WAS TO MAKE ENOUGH NOISE TO SCARE THE ENEMY AND THEN TO RECEIVE – WITH THEIR BODIES – THE FIRST ROUND OF BULLETS. Lines of boys fell as nothing more than a temporary barricade.
WITH FALLING WHISTLES, THEIR ONLY CHOICE IS TO GEIGN DEATH OR FACE IT.
Ra Ra Riot. Always fun, upbeat enough but not overboard – the ‘pre’, ‘warm ups’ music.
They are what you’d expect for a indie group. Nothing over the top unique but always a good enjoyable sound.
Walking through the many isles through PROJECT Trade show, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed with the many designers, many booths, you find yourself questioning where to spend your time and who to visit! But then, there are a few rare booths that draw you in, eyes pierced, legs shuffling, totally capitivated. For me, it’s new designer love that I get a total high from. One who comes out of no where with amazing product, a fantastic marketing and business sense and a smile. That’s how it went down with myself and UNDREST. They are LA based line, only a few years old, and killing it. They do swimwear mainly, but also really cute RTW pieces and lounge wear. It has cute vintage feel, beach inspired, floral cottons, and mesh overlay pieces. Their flagship store is on Robertson and newly opened, Venice California. See for yourself why I’m loving these…
I’ve actually never met Jenn, but I know I already love her. She’s stylish, has the ‘perfectly undone’ look mastered, and loves VINTAGE! (We all know vintage makes my heart go pitter pat) On top of that, she’s an amazing Senior Fashion Editor. She’s a lot of things I see in myself now, and a few years back, and I admire her go getter mentality at such a young age. She knows her stuff, music and fashion I might add, and does it well. I don’t need to say much else, the lovely editor has said it all….
“Once upon a time, Vintage met modern.. and their lovechild resulted in my favorite summer trend. I have always been a fan of anything vintage. On the borderline of obsession with old movies, music and furniture, I naturally found a way to incorporate it into my style. I am always sure to pair my vintage ensemble with trendy pieces to keep the look updated without straying from my personal style. This summer, I have been in love (and borderline) obsessed with pops of color pastels. Pastel pinks and seafoam have taken over my closet, jewelry armoire, and nails. I love the matte nail polish because, unlike most nail polished, this one is not shiny, but more like literal paint. Liberty of London has a great new home in Target, where I can find my favorite floral prints (like the cruiser below) at affordable prices. Being an avid fan of Vampire Weekend, my love for them elevated after seeing their amazing live performance at Coachella 2010. Aside from their beautiful music, I have always admired their album artwork of having a vintage feel. I will be paying the group another visit in September at Berkley’s Greek Theatre, and couldn’t be more excited! I am 21 years old, I am a student at San Jose State University and I am the Senior Editor for Helium Magazine, a new fashion magazine and Sjhelium.com website for the Silicon Valley. People often don’t think of the Silicon Valley as a fashionable region, but we are trying to change that. While home to the highest grade of technology, there are so many talented and creative people that reside here- and our goal is to bring these people together to form a community. Having just released our first issue in May, we are currently working on our second issue, and just recently launched a San Francisco branch called Sfhelium.com. I am proud and excited to continue onto bigger endeavors and working with and discovering talent and creativity both locally and beyond.”

As much as I love fashion, I almost love photography just as much – fashion photography that is. There are so many amazing fashion photographers that don’t get recognized as they should. When a beautiful spread is done in a magazine, their name appears in size 8 font never to be seen or recognized again. Ben Travato’s blog began over a year ago and has been featuring some amazing, old and new, fashion photographers. I find inspiration every time I visit his blog and even more so after reading the photographers stories. This was shot for F. Hush magazine which launches this year. Being a Swedish photographer, his work is focused mainly in Swedish magazines but from his past collections he seems to use an overlay of light on the photo to give it a blurred yet angelic look. See more of his work HERE.
If you are a Fashion photographer and would like to have your work featured on Style Wax Poetic, please email me @ krisjoyconahan@gmail.com. I am a LA based stylist and would also be happy to assist you with your shoot.
If you are a Fashion Blogger, you most definitely know about Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB). If not, now you know! They are the main and only go to community for all things Fashion Blogger related. Jennine, who runs The Coveted, started as a Fashion Blogger herself and realized the need for such a community, offering tech tips, trading links and ideas, and setting the tone as Fashion Bloggers get Front Row Seats at Fashion Week.
Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB) cultivates a community for fashion bloggers to share their experiences and create a resource so everyone can build a better blog. We do this by posting helpful articles, host a community linking group, forums and our newest feature, LittleBirdie, a platform to connect bloggers and PR in a safe an mutually beneficial way.
I’m so honored to be a part of Links A La Mode this week on IFB. See below some of the other amazing Fashion Bloggers included and see the full post HERE.Happy Sunday!! Hope its as beautiful where you are as it is here in Los Angeles. Xx
