{Style Chat: Q & A with Lubov Azria}

With more than 500 retail stores worldwide and over 200 in the U.S., BCBGMAXAZRIA GROUP has dominated women’s fashion retail. The husband-wife team has nearly perfected the sexy, body-hugging dress to the likes of celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and First Lady Michelle Obama. Lubov Azria is the woman behind it all—BCBGMAXAZRIA, Hervé Léger and more. She and husband Max Azria were awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees from The Academy of Art University on Friday, where we got to sit down with her to talk about fashion, technology and keeping things fresh with Max in the design room. Join us as we get to know the lovely, Lubov Azria.

SWP: How did you know fashion was your official artistic choice of expression?

LA: I didn’t, it was a journey. I originally started as a Ballerina in Ukraine. And then, growing older, that wasn’t the right path for me and I also loved art. I wanted to be an art professor. But then I realized it wasn’t very profitable and very competitive and my alternate was fashion.

SWP: What is the biggest piece of advice you are giving to young fashion designers?

LA: Follow your dreams. And never give up. That alone, will take you far.

SWP: What was the first article of clothing you and Max ever designed together?

LA: Oh gosh, hmm… I think it was a suit made out of stretch satin.

SWP: In your opinion, what is the most important thing for people to consider when dressing themselves?

LA: Dress to your body shape. I think many people don’t realize they might not look good in certain shapes. Wear clothes that give you more shape. Women should dress based on their body shape not based on trends.

SWP: You’ve dressed many famous celebrities, but who have you not styled/dressed yet that you’d like to?

LA: That’s a good question. I love musicians so I’d really like to dress Blondie.

SWP: From Hervé Léger to the Miley Cyrus collaboration for Wal-Mart, you’ve created created a broad spectrum of clothing lines. Why is it important for you to have such diverse cornerstones of fashion retail?

LA: I think it’s exciting. There’s an opportunity that comes your way and it’s really good to experiment with it and see where it takes you. You know, life is a journey not a destination. So I think it’s good to experience collaboration and communication with other designers.

SWP: Which of you had the idea of revamping Hervé Léger, you or Max?

LA: We were both really passionate about it, it was teamwork. It’s very unique and truly special and truly couture. It’s been an artists’ dream to work on that line.

SWP: Do you still have the same passion you had from Day 1? If so, what keeps you so passionate?

LA: I believe my purpose in life, is to make things better. I wake up each morning with only one thought, ‘how do I make it better?’ And that’s what drives me every single day. Improve, make it better, grow, learn, evolve, change inspire.

SWP: You’ve said you find inspiration everywhere in your travels. Have you found inspiration from San Francisco?

LA: Oh my gosh, absolutely. This is my first time truly able to enjoy the city and, wow, the interior design here is incredible. The old mixed with the new—it’s incredibly inspirational. I didn’t realize how amazing this city is. I think when people talked about San Francisco—now, I have a totally new perspective.

SWP: Being that you are in the Silicon Valley at the moment, has technology had an impact on your businesses?

LA: Yes, it’s changed everything. My favorite app is iAnnotate, I can’t live without my iPhone and I’m constantly on my iPad. I use Skype with my kids when we’re apart and I, just… can’t image being without technology. I see a huge difference from when we first started designing. Social media has been incredible and the whole blogging industry has been a fantastic revolution. These women have something to say, have impeccable sense of style, are great writers and great communicators. I’m obsessed with them.

{The Boyfriend is Back}

DSC_0953 DSC_0966 DSC_0968 DSC_1019 DSC_1023 DSC_1030

Grab those boyfriend jeans, a pair of booties and cute blazer – the boyfriend is back. I forgot how great they were and how much I love the boyfriend style until I received my new jeans!

A month ago, I attended the NYDJ’s  preview (I try to make it every season) and got a sneak peek of their Spring/Summer 2013 styles. Their collection ranged from floral prints, to mint jeans and amazing workwear pants, but I ended up walking away with a pair of boyfriend jeans. Today I’m wearing them with a fun tan bootie from Charles Jourdan, a polka dot blazer from Nordstrom Rack and and a top by All Saints. NYDJ is also doing some amazing tops this season that I’m loving. If you missed last year’s post, you can check it out here.

If you haven’t already, grab yourself a great pair of boyfriend jeans for the season. They’re lovely for the weekend and definitely appropriate for work paired with a heel and blazer.

Lately I’ve been obssessed with Rachel Zoe. She’s always chic, boho and looking fabulous while being comfortable. I found a part of her super wide leg floral pants and Loehmanns and new I’d get a lot of use out of them, especially for Spring 2013. It’s all about FLORALS! I wanted to add pop of color for daytime while still keeping it casual, so I added my go-to jean jacket which I adore. (Another steal from Loehamanns) I have been wearing it with almost everything – definitely a MUST HAVE for any girl’s closet. I use mine for dressing down any dress or outfit that I want to make a little more casual for day or weekend wear.

We love Rachel Zoe- I’ll be back with more ways to style these fun pants soon. Have a great rest of your weekend. XOXO SWP

{Spring Suits, Short Suits}

Short Suits Spring 2013  Trend

There is something charming about a short suit. It’s classy without being too stuffy and while they’re definitely ‘office appropriate’ they’re playful enough for a night out. Tory Burch, Jason Wu, Elie Saab were just a few of the designers who recognized this wearable yet stylish take on menswear for Spring. While you can keep it chic with a pair of heels, I also love a more casual, edgy take on the suit. Add a wedged bootie or chic hat and you’ll be sure to stand out, in the best possible way. Shop my picks below – I adore the floral suit – tres chic!

{Nighttime at The Grove}

Photography by Derek Martin

Lately, I’ve been loving The Grove. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 3 years now and I can count on two hands the amount of times I’ve been to The Grove. I went on a weekday for a lunch appointment a few weeks ago and realized how much I love it there – it was sunny, not too crowded, so many cutes stores keep you occupied. I remember thinking why don’t I go there more often? I loved wandering through the Farmers Market, reading books and shopping while sipping on a Coffee Bean. Now that TopShop opened up, there is even more of a reason to love it.

We went back at night and took a couple shots last weekend under the lights. They were even playing Frank Sinatra, which brought us right back to Christmas time. It was lovely evening.

I’m wearing a skirt I’ve had in my closet since last year, but I recently found a new love for it since I purchased my new jean jacket. It’s a dressier skirt because of the material, but can be worn more casually as I did when paired with a jean jacket and hat. If you love the skirt, you’re in luck. I found it still available and marked down to $35 dollars! More outfit details below.

{Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman Launches At JCPenney}

Marchesa for JC Penny

I overheard a few girls talking about an affordable shoe line by Marchesa being shown at MAGIC Market week in Vegas – exciting, right?! What was overheard is now brought to life and will be launching at JC Penney March 1st! (JC Penney still exists?!)

I’ve heard the name Marchesa a million times, 90% of them from watching Rachel Zoe’s reality series on Bravo which I used to absolute love, but who can really afford those prices and where are you really going to wear a gown from Marchesa?

Georgina Chapman (designer at Marchesa) will design Pearl (named after her daughter’s middle name) for JCPenney. Her own capsule collection will be stocked in 500 in-store boutiques around the country starting March 1st. These frocks will be geared toward a slightly younger audience, and more wearable pieces since not everyone walks down the red carpet every night. I’m looking forward to seeing it in person – stay tuned! XO

{LACMA + Sequence}

Street Style at LACMASequened dress at lacma

pink and white dress

I love this dress. I’ve been called “Carrie Bradshaw” before, mainly when I have curly hair, but this dress really makes me feel like Sex In The City – LA version, of course, and who wouldn’t want that?

There is something to say about sequence –  it  can really make an outfit pop. I wanted to tone this overly girly outfit  down a bit, so instead of wearing a simple heel, I wore a black bootie, which gave it a bit of edge. Another way I love to add a bit of edge to an outfit is with a leather jacket. If you don’t have one, invest! If you feel your outfit is a little to dressed up for the occasion, try switching up just these two things and it can really make an outfit cool, instead of too fancy.

We had such a good day on Sunday. We wandered around LACMA shooting, playing, relaxing in their adorable cafe – it was, a perfect Sunday.

{Topshop LA is HERE | Shop Our Favorites}

topshop1
topshop

When I was offered the chance to stop in the new Topshop LA store for their shopping preview day, I jumped on without a thought. LA has been anticipating the arrival of this brazen brand for ages and I was told the New York City store opening had 500 people the first day. Having the chance to browse the store on with VIPs and fashion influences in LA, champange, cupcakes and our own personal shopper was all a blogger could ever ask for.

The store is beautiful, well merchandised and I pretty much wanted everything. I’ve been shopping online a lot, but there’s something to say about seeing something in person. It’s so much different! I adore their tees, their dresses, faux leather jackets, their LOVE collection, jean and of course their amazing shoes. I could have been in there for hours. I walked away with a emerald green dress and the best fitting grey t-shirt ever, and of course a very long list on my wishlist.
