Zooey will be promoting the Beautiful Lengths Collection, which was created to
complement a charitable effort of the same name. Beautiful Lengths, founded
in 2006, aims to encourage long-haired folk to donate their lopped-off locks to
the American Cancer Society Wig Banks. Human hair wigs tend to be more natural-
looking than their synthetic counterparts, but the donated hair has to be in tip-top
condition before it can be turned into wigs. Zooey, well known for her trademark
fringe and glossy brown tresses, appears to be the perfect advocate for taking hair
care seriously.

The bright-eyed star is “thrilled” to be Pantene’s new spokeswoman, and she feels
passionate about both the brand and the cause. In an official statement following
the announcement, she revealed: “Anyone who knows me knows that I am really
into hair. I’m a real girly girl and love doing my hair and experimenting with different
styles.”

Zooey’s signature quirky look and charming fashion sense make her a great style
icon for the summer months. Often seen pairing cute summer dresses with kitsch
jewellery and comfy-looking flats, the self-proclaimed girly girl usually keeps her
make-up to a minimum, sticking to an ‘au naturel’ look.

The key to copying Zooey’s fun fashion sense is to invest in an essential summer
dress. Aim to find a versatile piece that can be either dressed up by slinging on a
pair of high heels and grabbing a glam clutch, or kept basic with a denim jacket and

Guests also oogled and obsessed over the George, Gina & Lucy handbag collection. The brand from Germany who started in 2004 is making it’s way to the U.S. and we couldn’t be happier. The nylon bags are a hit in Europe and Germany says George, Gina & Lucy’s U.S. Director of PR Amy Radich. What makes this line of handbags unique is “there is a bag for every person,” she says. With an array of colors, prints and sizes we can truly see what Radich is talking about. There is a bag for every women for every stage in her life.

And thanks to Michael Segal and Kristen Segal, George, Gina & Lucy have partnered with non-profit Heal the Bay to raise awareness on how people can help clean and save the ocean. Heal the Bay’s mission is to educate people with science and legislation and to “encourage people to take steps to make a difference in their neighborhood and ocean,” says Kate Nevels, Development Manager for Heal the Bay. With summer around the corner, Nevels also encourages beach goers to download the beach report card app for your smart phone to know when the ocean is safe to enter and when it is not.

Mt. Wolf is a four member band based in London, but have been gathering significant attention internationally. Although now city folk, each of them were born by the sea – Kate and Stevie in Guernsey, Bassy in Dorset and Alex in Brighton. This dual experience of living in two different locations play a huge influence on their music, which conjures a dark and isolated but beautiful world.

Their music is described as ‘dreamfolk’; a fusion of Folk and Electronica. They take the best elements of sequenced synths, melodic strings, deep UK bass grooves and soulful vocals and combine them all into a cinematic hybrid of heart-melting harmonies and contemporary, endlessly danceable electronica. The band draw on influences such as M83, Little Dragon, Sbtrkt, Bon Iver and Youth Lagoon. Front woman Kate Sproule draws inspiration has been compared to Bjork and Martha Wainwright, with her voice capturing the attention of the most restless of audiences.

The band is currently working on material for a upcoming EP as well as live shows. Mt. Wolf will be flying to the US to perform at this year’s Symbiosis Gathering, Nevada alongside James Blake and Little Dragon.

Inspiration musically for their upcoming EP and songs comes from a fusion of bass and electronic music with the ethereal and earthy sounds of folk. This reflection is of the band’s influence as four friends who grew up by the sea but who now live in big cities.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Mt. Wolf will come to LA sooner rather then later, be sure to keep this European band on your music radar.

One of my favorites, and a lovely one for spring, is the Crown Chakra Gown, from his Colours of I collection. Zaeem describes, ‘The pure silk chiffons and crepe layers on this dress feel amazing on the skin, and the silhouette  is stunningly flattering and sexy with the side cut outs, backless cross neck and front low v-neck (which can be deepened), but also  elegant and flowy with its draped pleating. At the center, intricate Swarovski crystal embroidered curves are set around a citrine gemstone which is intricately sewn on by hand – we follow this for all our gemstones and crystals so we don’t need to damage them by drilling.  The dress – its vivid yellow colour, silhouette and citrine stone are all reflective of the solar plexus chakra – the stone is even set in this position. The chakras are basically our energy centers, and the yellow solar plexus chakra is associated with optimism, self-esteem, charm and stimulation. If you wear this dress, you can’t help but feel really happy, alive, vibrant and radiant!”

While I love a great bold yellow, his white pieces were so angelic and beautiful, I couldn’t keep my eyes off them.  White is associated with soul radiance.  White is the culmination of all the colours of the spectrum and stands for purity, essence and radiance.

SWP: When did you realize you want to be a fashion designer?

I was born and raised in London but have a range of influences in my heritage and for the last few years have been living between LA, London and Dubai!  I remember the first time someone asked me when I was young what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said “a fashion designer or the Prime Minister of England…’ I managed to keep up both dreams by studying at the London School of Economics and summer schooling at the London College of Fashion, but after a stint in the corporate world, I had to admit my true calling was fashion and so made the shift.

SWP: The concept of spirituality is very much implemented in your brand, could you explain the concept and reason behind it?

The desire to inject soul and purpose into the dynamic world of fashion and couture is achieved by weaving energy-enhanced crystals with luxury silks and beautiful, wearable designs.  Whilst in today’s world it is often implied that the spiritual and material worlds are very separate, in fact they can be combined. The concept of this in fashion is that whilst a piece of clothing can be aesthetically beautiful in terms of its design, silhouette, colour, print, embellishment, fabric etc, other elements can also be added to make it beautiful in the deeper sense in terms of the way it makes the wearer feel. For example our ‘Colours of I’ collection introduce the concept of energy centers (Chakras) using specific colours and precious gemstones that help enhance the energy of the wearer. The Angels collection (SS12) has dresses designed around each Angel conveying the resonance – for example the Angel Michael  inspired gowns reflect his properties of being the protector and the way we have designed the sequins panels as well as matching draped stoles, makes you feel protected as you walk along with of course his signature dark blue colour…

SWP: Your new collection is inspired by Egypt can you tell us more about it?

The Ancient Egyptian civilization was one of the most powerful and knowledgeable cultures of all time, perhaps even the most. Autumn/Winter continues the journey for the brand with an exploration into the magic and mystery of ancient Egypt. Inspired by hieroglyphics and depictions of Deity and Royalty from mystical monuments along the Nile Delta, the collection encompasses luxurious designs for today’s discerning woman, offering key pieces from sheer chiffon dresses and silk gowns through to stylish separates. Each piece has been designed to reflect the Zaeem Jamal design principle; incorporating balance, poise, purpose and grace.
In keeping with the fashion trends of Queens and nobility who reigned over the Egyptian Dynasties, fluid silk gowns in alabaster white sweep the floor in sumptuous heavy silks featuring beautiful, gilded necklines. Each dress is diffused in a blanket of sequins and hidden symbols, creeping deliberately onto cuffs, wrapping around waistlines and entwined around necklines.

Breathtaking embroidery bursts onto serene column dresses in an explosion of colour from carmine red to Egyptian gold, whilst individually placed stones are cleverly incorporated into designs, symbolising strength and serenity.  A cascading colour palette of Egyptian lapis lazuli blue and emerald green flashes across carefully considered shift dresses. Intricately hand embroidered with over 800 hours of metal thread work, each dress portrays a strikingly modern interpretation of the traditional Egyptian border design and motif.

Cleopatra inspires the finale dress channeling a sense of youthful glamour, with a strong sense of spirit the collection is fit for a Queen.

I have to say I truly so many trips last year to Luxor especially working on this collection, experiencing the magic of Egypt, its heritage, and culture.

The red lights burned brightly at The Colorado in Pasadena on a Monday night, one of C-Horse’s favorite dive bars to get a drink and unwind after practice.

Songwriter and front woman Cecilia Enriquez formed C-Horse in 2007 as an outlet for her 60’s inspired pop songs. What started as a one woman band and a Myspace music page soon became a humble, talented band of four.

In 2009 the band became who their fans see them as today and although their choices in music crisscross, its Enriquez’s lyrics and the bands melodies that bring them together, “We all have a distinctive taste in music, but at some point we all intersect and come together,” says Courtney Olsen, C-Horse’s drummer.

“There is something for everybody [in C-Horse],” says Lindsay Mancha, who plays bass in the band. The music attracts people who grew up in the 60’s who like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, but also younger, indie audiences who likes pop music inspired by the 60’s, she says.

“I’ve heard our music being describes as ‘magical mermaid music’,” says Olsen.

Before keyboardist Mack Marquard joined the band, Enriquez says that one fan called C-Horse a, “female version of The Beatles, the featles.”

When it comes down to it, C-Horse is a group of people who share the same passion for music, “We’re four people who enjoy making music together,” says Mancha

“Anybody can appreciate the songs, we don’t fall in to a specific category and that allows us to reach a broader audience,” says Olsen.

This summer C-Horse will be releasing a 7” inch with two new songs, which includes Tongues. The band also hopes to do some touring along the west coast, their next show is tomorrow, Tuesday April 24 at the SliverLake Lounge.

What followers can also expect is their favorite C-Horse songs polished, says Marquard along with new merchandise.

“There is a lot involved in being in a band then people realize,” says Olsen, “but as artists it’s important we make time for things like this in our lives.”

In addition to creating beautiful eco-friendly products, Raven + Lily is equally dedicated to making a positive difference in women’s lives and empowering them through design – currently collections from Ethiopia and India. Their paper collection is crafted by women in Northern India, where they print press and stamp delicate images on handmade, recycled paper, created entirely from paper and cotton waste from the textile industry. Newspapers, cotton rags, old army tents, and denim jeans have a whole new purpose.  Soaps are made with love using organic and natural ingredients and wood jewelry is handcrafted form locally sourced wood. Marginalized Muslim women from this region gain employment and sustainability for themselves and their families by crafting stationery and journals from these materials.  In the mountains of Northern Ethiopia, farmers supply bead makers with artillery shells from former war conflicts that are found on their lands for Raven + Lily’s beaded jewelry collection.  Raven + Lily’s partnership helps employ women from this area and also provides HIV care and educational opportunities for their whole family.  These women skillfully create their exclusive jewelry designs in a loving, community environment. What was once intended for harm now brings hope and positivity.
